Patriots Win BIG 8-5 to Kincardine Bulldogs!

For a team that has seen a few big goal games go against htem over the past couple years, the Patriots wild 8-5 ride over the Kincardine Bulldogs came as a welcome change of pace.

The Mount Forest Jr C squad found its spark on Saturday night, as they hosted Kincardine and humbled them with a stunning come-from-behind victory. The Bulldogs got the jump on the Patriots, racking up a 4-0 lead in the first period alone, but the locals were not about to roll over. A burst of six goals in the third period carried the home side to a definitive victory.

Stopping 34 shots, goaltender Brendan Zwambag picked up the win, and added an assist for good measure. Mount Forest added to their shot total with every period, firing eight at the Bulldog cager in the first period, 16 more in period two, and 22 in their dominant period.

The Patriots played well en route to their first victory of the year, showing a lot of drive, hard work and momentum, while hitting the penalty box with only seven infractions. The rookies and veterans are beginning to gel and have been moving the puck with speed and precision in recent action.

It was the visiting side, however, that started moving the puck on Saturday, as the Bulldogs build a 2-0 lead on the power-play. Normanby’s Ben Davis then made it 3-0 for the Dogs. Finding themselves down 4-0 in the opening frame. Mount Forest got the ball rolling as Cody McDonald scored on the power play from Brendan Reay.

Nathan Woodard cut the damage to 4-2 just inside the final minute of period one, also on the power-play with assists from Robbie Moe and Zwambag. The scoring stalled in the second, as neither side could light the lamp. Kincardine opened period three with an early goal, but 5-2 was as good as it would get for the upstaged Bulldogs.

Justin Anslie scored the first of the third frame, assisted by Bobby Underwood, and Doug Ardis added two in a row to tie the game 5-5. Patriot captain Brock West, Moe and Woodard assisted on the Ardis tallies.

Mount Forest’s Dylan Hoffman drained the game winning goal, on a feed from Brad Larkin and former Normanby champion Andrew Holliday. Veteran Dave Boswell came up with an unassisted effort to make it 7-5, and Jed Ironmonger finished a play from Jon Aitken to close out the 8-5 upset.

Walkerton and Wingham are still undefeated after five games, and lead the Western league with five wins each. Mount Forest is currently in fifth place, ahead of Mitchell and Goderich. The invigorated Patriots will be tested this weekend, however as they face back to back games with the Walkerton Hawks.
