Photo Archive Organization

Since my kids have been young, I have organized my photos by year and month, as they grew this was the optimal way to organize and know where to find age specific photos.

However now having teens, and more time on my hands, I am thinking I need to shift my storage for my photographic art images. I am thinking, I will go through and pull out all images that aren’t family related and pull them into folders so that when I am looking for Macro, but then I also have a lot of macro bee’s… do I separate them within the macro folder for ease?! I have a lot of Landscape, in all seasons. But then if taking photos of our various tours with family and friends, would that cross into some public photos, yes, should they be organized differently?

I am curious, how you all organize your photos on your computer… would you care to share with me?

  1. I started my photography hobby May 2010 and started filing into folders at the same time. I have somehow stopped about 7 years ago, but have randomly set up a new folder when I need it. Some images are in 2-3 folders.

Flowers (from the Royal Botanic Gardens where I used to live next to) are filed in individual folders as well as a more recent folder “flowers” which I made one Sunday morning. It took about 3-4 hours to go through 13500+ o,ages to file 1868 flower shots for example.

Individual flower folders e.g. rose, geranium…….most are named by their common names. I do have 5-6 ‘lily’ folders for example.

Grass species – which I’m currently naming because I’m interested in them.

    Weeds

    Macro

    Black & white

    Street photography

Insects (which I’m currently splitting up into sub-folders of dragonflies, damselflies, spiders, beetles, butterflies & so on.

Individual bird folders (about 105 species) and now today I’m going through to have a general folder “birds”. Only takes a few hours to scroll through my 13,500 images. Had probs with RSI and osteoarthritis in my fingers so had to take severaal months off scrolling (and long typing).’

Red. (mainly red flowers up close)

Blue (also includes the sea and photos that appear mainly blue)

Melbourne Zoo – the Great Aviary

    Beach – St Kilda

    Beach – Port Melbourne

Beach……each of the 5 beaches I did regular visits and photography

I have family photos as well as my 2 brothers country properties but I’m not allowed to share family photos as they don’t want to appear on the internet – don’t know why as they’re all good photos

I’ve got about 250 folders, but I can assure you they are all worth while creating.

My bird photos are the most neglected folders so I might take time off over Christmas to file them so I can scan them and delete many of the hundreds of Sparrow photos.

Sorry for the long comment, but it seemed easiest to give you some idea of what I, personally, need folders for.

Your photo folders should fit your needs, not mine.

I do all this as a sort of Mindful Meditation. I’ve do this filing whenever I’ve got spare time and bored at home all day. I have limits due to Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 3 heart conditions, spinal condition & 3 back surgeries and so on.

Feel free to delete this comment after you’ve read it, as it’s a bit too long to leave in situ.

(I am also a qualified Aromatherapist and have certificates in other alternative therapies from the 1990s in case you’re interested).
