This is the perfect rainy day activity for someone with the challenge that Ritva has brought for us this week!

Cropping, Black and White Conversion and Editing Impression.
This can totally shift an image, and sometimes in big ways! I personally love editing a great black and white image, I used to play with my photos so much more than I have been! This past weekend I was able to get some great beach storm pictures and I was excited to shift some into black and white. I will admit, one I was surprised at how it shifted, not as good as I expected it would be!
Cropping
This beach shot I felt was perfect to show a wide angle and cropped in image of the storm clouds coming from behind the trees.
Above is wide 24mm and below is 70mm cropped in
I personally love both images, as to me they both give a different feeling. I love wide angle, it shows so much more detail, and yet the zoomed in cropped version has more focus on the chairs and canoe on the beach. Whereas the first I feel, is more a scenic shot.
Black and White
The above image in colour, and below in black and white.
I love clouds, I find them so intriguing and they bring so much character to the sky. For this one, I pushed the editing much more than I normally do.
I am honestly loving the effect on the photo above, the left side is feeling a bit too processed for me, and I also love the details that are pulling forward. A reminder to me to push my limits a bit more…

I like the cropping of the first photo, and the textures of the clouds in the others. That quote from Weston is spot on!

Well, I will start with saying thanks for sharing your thoughts about editing. Then the first image is better cropped as the red canoe as a focal point – it is effective. The the conversion to B&W white is bland, compared to the original, bt you could have done something totally different to it too. Choices we make. The clouds are so impressed with edit. That is the case with the last edit. Little color and light and contrast can be effective and the cropping brings the focus what you want the viewer to see. Great post.

Thank you Ritva, I felt the same with my b&w conversion, it felt flat. I may play around with it more to see if I can pull more from the clouds. Appreciate your feedback!

You’ve shown us how much fun can be had with “playing” in photography Pamela 😊. My favorite of the set is the way you played with your opening image. My favorite is the version just above the final B&W. It still looks natural but brings all of the elements together beautifully.

Thank you Tina, I appreciated this challenge, when my kids were young I had more ‘time’ in the evenings to play with images, my creativity is drawing me back!

Pam, it is really interesting to see how cropping can change the mood and the story in some photos. Your examples showed that really well. The chairs and boat, when cropped, tell a completely different story from the overall scene. The same with the pushed edits in the clouds. It was like a storm was approaching. Well done!
