This is an intriguing challenge to me and one that I was excited to see. Its my birthday today and I am excited to share some of my favourite abstract images for the challenge that Sophia introduced to us. She shared a beautiful collection, personally I really like the first two! If you would like to participate in the challenge be sure to check out her post for examples of images.
Edited to Add I just realized I did this post wrong – so I am editing August 31st morning to how it should be! The images are above and the descriptions all together below.
The Photos
- I took this photo the other night, at our family cottage, there are certain views that are embedded into my mind and memory and many of those I also like to capture with my camera. Focus fell on this and it created this abstract type image – that I love!
- I had to look at the date to figure out what this image was… and then it quickly came back. Last Christmas, the lights on our tree I was taking photos and suddenly focus was gone. This has happened a lot more to me since my brother passed in Nov 2024… especially when taking photos of our family <3
- Many of you may see this and guess Nature, you are right. I was taking pictures of tree branches and lost focus and love the result!
- Many may recognize this as pine needles of a pine tree. We have a few smaller ones on the property and a few weeks ago this stood out to me as an image to take, but one that had me puzzled of how or where to share it.
- Water droplets on the grass, I love how memorizing this image is!
- Moss, but on what? This is on an older tree at our family cottage, it caught my eye a couple weeks ago and I am loving the depth and colours of this image!
- I remember standing looking at the water and seeing the weeds, I knew this image would be useful one day! The bottom of the Port Elgin Harbour!
- This was also a couple weeks ago at the beach, what is it? I have no clue honestly ;)
- A blurry snap from our son’s first race last night… What is it? Its a street stock. Our family has racing in its blood, my husband, cousin, brother and now son… it was a thrilling night!
Thank you Sofia for a great challenge to open our creative minds!

I like the variety of images, pine to stock racing. Touching that the camera mourns the loss of your brother. Even blurry, the first image looked like a Christmas tree.

Thank you Rebecca!
I realized when looking through others posts I had composed this wrong, so I went through this am and moved the descriptions.

Happy birthday Pamela :) A great collection of abstracts. Co-Pilot says this about your last but one image image – It’s the shed exoskeleton of a cicada nymph — also called an exuvia.
The insect has already crawled out of this shell during its final molt. What you’re seeing is the hollow, papery outer skin it left behind, still clinging to the surface with those strong little claws. The split along the back is where the adult cicada emerged.
Who’d have guessed!! :)

Happy Birthday, Pam! Loved your gallery even though I didn’t nail many of them. But, I knew it was an insect’s skin even if I couldn’t say what insect it was. Well done – and thanks to Steve!

The way you described the focus slipping away after your brother passed is deeply moving. It makes sense that grief can make the world feel a bit blurry, both literally and emotionally. I am so sorry for your loss. It is interesting how the camera captures what our eyes might miss when we are distracted by memory. The abstract nature of those Christmas lights feels like a perfect visual metaphor for that time. I hope the cottage views bring you some peace as you continue to process. Your images have a quiet strength to them that speaks to the resilience of holding onto beauty even when things feel uncertain. Thank you for sharing such a personal and vulnerable part of your creative journey with us all.

Dan, thank you, truly for your kind words. Grief is a fickle thing for sure, especially when its unexpected and someone young. It truly has rocked my world.
