Patient Parenting, a concept I once thought was crazy. How on earth can you be patient every moment, especially having children.

I now firmly believe our children come to us to help us grow into the people we are meant to be. My children have created a patient, compassionate and calm mom. A mom who once was reactive, broken, hurting and not confident.

I was given children who test me every single day – which I honestly love. Their beautiful personalities shine bright and when for whatever reason they get thrown off and their confidence takes a nose dive. Our children are a true reflection of us, how we live is how they learn to live. When our children see us being hard on ourselves – they become more critical of themselves. Ive noticed as Ive been on my personal development journey for the past 4+ years my children are also becoming more resilient.

I now see how we truly do all support each other’s mental health.

Yesterday my son, who plays defence, scored a goal in their hockey game! It was an incredible shot! His true talent was shining bright. Today during their game the puck ricocheted off his stick and into our net. Everything great that had happened before then, were gone and I watched from the stands as I could see my son sinking. How did I know? Because it was once me, its still something I continually work on to build myself up.

What I did notice though, was our parenting approach that we now take with our kids. Where before he would have just cut out the entire world and sank down further, he was open to talking, where he would have just said “Im fine” he now converses with us on what happened and strategies to get through some of those parts of the game that suck in the moment and can bring you down.

I am proud of him and I am proud of us. I am thankful and grateful for the life lesson’s we’ve had as they have truly given us experience to learn and grow into our very best selves!

Wisdom Wednesday – Raising Them Up

Raising little ones is the best and most challenging part of my life. One I wouldn’t give up for the world and also one that has made me cry great big alligator tears.

Being a parent has been a journey in itself. What is right for one parent or child will not be exactly right for another parent or child.

However what I have learned is that being a parent doesn’t have to be hard. Raising a child is simply that… raising them to be the best person they can be as they learn this wonderful world we love in.

As I type this my son has been sending me photos of how he unpacked our monthly doTERRA order and unwrapped everything and has it sorted on our kitchen table. He found the Holiday Guide and was also sending me photos of what’s in it and what he would like (and why!!!). I love that we are able to show the kids a different way (from how we both grew up-which I’m not knocking at all) of taking care of our health in a more natural holistic way.

The other night my daughter and I were talking. Early we had been talking about feelings and that evening she made a comment about how every single person no matter who they are or anything else, has a brain and a heart. I then added so everyone is capable of loving… and she finished with “and thinking”. Then she added in, but you don’t think with your heart you think with your head, your heart controls the blood flow in your body. I asked her where she feels her feelings. She pointed to her solar plexus and said right here! At her young age she already has a base understanding of our body and our “3 brains”… our brain, heart and gut!

One reason I love the oils are a part of our life, is because they give us reasons to talk much more openly about how we feel. And what the various oils can do for our emotions! Before school and at bedtime the kids each get oils on. I truly love our connection and the opportunity to spend that time with each of the kids.

Tonight after we got home from skating my boy was literally waiting for us to get home. Our Dream Convention kit arrived and he was eagerly awaiting to smell the new oils!!! The pure excitement and intrigue of the kids lit me up. I instantly grabbed my phone to capture the memory. Not just cause the oils smell good either, because they know they work! For the past 4+ years of their life this has been their healthcare! Well with the exception of Carson breaking his wrist lol. Even for that I was applying oils while in the hospital!

They eagerly went through the various new oils and products learning what they are and can use them for.

Which really got me thinking tonight. About how life doesn’t have to always be “perfect” for it to be one hell of an amazing experience. As I looked back at the video of my kids my heart felt like it was going to burst… and I almost missed this… because typically when I do Facebook lives I want to be sure the area is tidy and clean… well real life happens and I surprised myself tonight with how awesome it was to jump on and truly share the excitement in our home tonight… no judgment 🤩!

My Wednesday wisdom… just be yourself. Regardless of what whoever may think. Just be you and embrace real life with all the twist, turns, highs and lows.

Yes at this moment I have a few piles of papers on our island to deal with, piles of photos and frames in our entrance. But you know what this is because of the progress we’ve made. So if we have to live with a bit of “clutter” at the moment it’s ok because I feel even more motivated now to allow myself the week to get done what needs to and tackle the bigger jobs on the weekend!

Be nice to yourself. The slower we go in life, the more we can actually progress! Life is about living and loving. It’s not a competition. Just be you, the best you that you are here to be!

World Mental Health Day | Attitude Is Everything

A day we should all pay attention to and stand up for because it affects EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US!

Regardless of who you are, where you live, what you make, the house you live in, the car you drive or how much money is in your bank account.

Mental health affects every single one of us either directly or indirectly and many times both at the same time.

Regardless if its feeling sad, feeling depressed, tired, being challenged with invisible illnesses (in our home PCOS, Hypothyroidism, ADHD, IBS) there are so many ways we are all affected by mental health including: anxiety, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, addictions, personality disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, stress response syndrome, dissociative disorders, factitious disorders, sexual and gender disorders, somatic symptom disorders, tic disorders.

Mental health is also waking up in the morning and not wanting to get out of bed. It can start as something that simple.

Its so much more than just bringing awareness. There are so many campaigns who bring awareness to mental health – lets put that “awareness” aside and I want to speak with you direct. Whoever you are, wherever you are. YOU MATTER. Because regardless of all of these campaigns people are still suffering and dying. People are still suffering in silence. Even those people who claim to be “fine”! Lets bring light to mental health and move some mountains!

In my own experience this is how we can shift mental health…

  • Talk! Get your feelings out whether its talking, writing, singing… whatever feels natural to you! When we shine the light onto our own darkness we bring those issues to the surface where they can be dealt with, handled and supported properly!
  • Follow your gut. When someone says they are “fine” – they are not. It doesn’t matter who they are. Let the person know you know there is something bothering them and if they cannot talk to you to please reach out to someone. Don’t give up on them… but sometimes it does take tough love.
  • Gut health matters! If you’ve ever taken an antibiotic your gut health has been compromised. Compound that over years and possibly not eating healthy or consuming toxins. Our gut health is crucial to our overall health, including our mental health! Pro-biotics are a must as well what I found very effective was a cleanse and restore for my digestive system.
  • Include loved ones/family members within mental health care no matter the age of the person in crisis. Many family members and loved ones are hit literally with a brick wall of “privacy and consent” even though the person in dire need thinks they “are fine”. So many more people could be thriving. In my experience this is such a crucial and often missing piece of the mental health puzzle.
  • Teach our children to name their feelings and that it’s ok to experience emotions. Educate our children on the importance of talking with someone they trust who not only can support them (emotionally and financially) but also through a time of need to get proper care if required.
  • Use healthy clean products. We need to take a stance to STOP allowing toxins and chemicals to be used in our foods and products used in our homes, businesses and schools. I believe this is a very very strong link to why so many more people are suffering today (in combination about thinking they always need to be “busy”). Endocrine disruptors are a very real thing that have a negative impact on our physical and mental health.
  • Encourage healthy eating and meal planning with real food and better yet involve kids in the process of selecting recipes and meals! There are so many “convenience” pre-packaged pre-cooked foods out there filled with ingredients that many I cannot even read or pronounce!
  • Hydrate! Water is crucial to our mental health. Ditch the sugar filled and energy drinks!
  • Quiet the mind! It really is powerful when you take a moment and stop. Allow yourself to be in quiet and slow your mind. Meditation is a valuable asset for all of us no matter age.
  • Be active – inside and outside. Physical activity – even just getting outside in the sunshine, for a walk, yoga (my personal fav), running, weights etc.
  • Living a de-cluttered organized life. Clutter is suffocating. Less truly is more.
  • Real life experience taught in schools. Real life skills such as meal planning, what income taxes are and doing them, cooking, meal planning, budgeting and financial planning… These are real life things that can stress someone and contribute to their anxiety, depression etc.
  • Healthy options beyond pharmaceuticals. They are out there and they are extremely effective. Honestly since making a shift within our home over 4 years ago its made a dramatic improvement to our family’s overall health – mentally and physically! We have not used any chemicals/toxins to clean our home in 4 years! For us using essential oils in our home has supported our emotional , physical and mental health – incredibly! They are also used for cooking and cleaning too!!!
  • Embrace it! If you struggle with any of the above mental health issues – thats OK! Its a part of who you are and you should embrace it and BE YOU! Attitude is everything and once you are able to get past the stigma that is still prominently out there – you can truly thrive

Attitude is everything. When it comes to mental health – OWN IT!

When I truly found I could “own it” was after we experienced a flood in our home, just literally a few months after we completely renovated our basement – every single room. I hit a low. I pulled back from friends, from what I was finding joy in and for a couple months felt completely overwhelmed and defeated. What I learned from that experience was that I could literally feel and see myself sinking – where previously when I struggled with depression I hadn’t been able to. I saw that the changes I had been making and had already made in my life was actually making an impact on my life in a very positive way. I owned that experience. I was honest with people that I struggled – but the difference… I no longer felt ashamed to admit I was struggling. It simply was a fact of life.

However for many people, admitting they are struggling or in a bad time makes them feel like they are less of a person or worry what others will think of them. I get it, I used to be there. Focus on YOU! The REAL YOU… Focus on what YOU need to do to be and feel healthy. Sit back with a pen and paper and write about your ideal life – not your current life – your ideal life. What is out of alignment? There will probably be a lot… but that’s the point – bring it into the light, own it and then move foward to bring positive change.

As Gabby Bernstein says… “what we resist persists…” What are you resisting in your life?

Our Mental Health Care System is Broken

And this affects us all.

Regardless of who you are, where you live, what you make, the house you live in, the car you drive or how much money is in your bank account.

Mental health affects every single one of us either directly or indirectly and many times both at the same time.

Our mental health care system is broken.

I would love to bring a change so we see more people living than suffering and dying. I am only one person, I know. Ive been back and forth with this for a very long time. However if 1 person cannot find the courage to step up and challenge our current “norm” how can a change happen?

This is very near and dear to my heart. In my life I have been affected by mental health both direct and indirect. Im honestly not sure if either is any easier.

From my experience our health care system – which we truly are lucky to have – is a symptom based system to “fix” what is wrong and move on. People are prescribed highly addictive synthetic medications, sometimes cocktails of medications to manage the symptoms – which is “how they are feeling”. I have personally experienced this myself with both my physical and emotional health. Our medical system is purely that – medical. Medicinal based treating symptoms vs healthy living preventative health care promoting living and being in a cleaner, more nutritious life.

I personally struggled for years. Many of those years keeping quiet because, well technically I was “fine”. When I finally did go for help, it was after many negative experiences in my life and many years later.  Counseling did help, if you have considered it go – honestly do not even give it a second thought worrying what others may think or say, like I did for years. Even after I began I still hid what I was doing, almost ashamed. Ashamed of something that truly was never my problem – I can only control the way I act and treat others, not the way others treat me.

After our daughter was born I began to feel myself sink and having a baby and 18mth old at home I knew I needed to ask for help. But before I could, I finally opened up to my husband who very openly could see I was struggling and encouraged me to get help. My help was “go home and take one of these pills each morning”…

So I did. I relied on these pills to just make everything better for me. Which of course it didn’t.

The sad thing is I know I am not alone. I know there are so many people out there suffering and feeling challenged by how they feel and are living – but truly don’t know what to do. People who are in much more serious need for mental health attention but cannot get access to it.

In June 2014 I made a decision to [finally] take hold of my health. Its been a journey. A very enlightening, eye opening, raw, strength finding, loving, caring, empathetic journey that isn’t for the faint of heart. A journey that truly is different for each individual person and is lifelong once you decide to embark.

As I am now stronger both physically and emotionally I know I can help others make a difference in their life and perhaps even help shift our mental health care system in Canada.

I dream of a system that is accessible to every single person and supports a family care initiative. Loved ones seeing a family member in dire straights should have every right to get that person to help. Loved ones must be involved in the process of mental health regardless of age.

October is ADHD Awareness month and I am proud to use this as an example. Our son’s grade 1 teacher told him and myself that he “has ADHD and must be on medication” as well as “he cannot do this, doesn’t want to do that and can’t do this” – a typical response by many ‘outsiders’ because my experience with this comes in two directions.

  1. The statement of “he has ADHD and must be on medication” is the typical response to “treat” what is going on physically – many ADHD boys have a hard time sitting still, staying focused for any length of time and understanding personal space. ADHD is very real. We very much live an ADHD lifestyle which since our son’s diagnosis has also truly transformed our life. ADHD also affects children and adults emotionally as well. So my son hearing the above statement sent him into a tailspin of hating school even more than he previously disliked. He was falling behind in what he “should know” and became a very unhappy child. However we do not look at it as needing “something” to fix him – our son is absolutely incredible and by supporting him where he truly needs support we are able to see his true personality and intelligence shine through. By choosing to first look at our surroundings, our routine, the food and drinks we consume, the products we use – to help paint us a more thorough picture. The other key factor we learned was our son has a learning disability – difference actually because he learns differently outside of what the “standard” says how he should learn… this was a big part of how he was being affected emotionally. He is a very intelligent child, however by learning different the “standard school” atmosphere of learning was completely off for him. Had I just listened to that teacher and put my child on medication, he would have missed out on understanding that he does learn differently, that counselling at any age is OK, its OK to ask questions – even more than once, everyone learns at different stages, behavioural modification and real life lessons. Most of all I believe he would have seen his personality as a burden vs a strength of who he is. What needed to happen was his parents needed to educate themselves more of what living an ADHD life is all about and embrace it! Interesting thing… its also the way his mother should be living (with PCOS) and a healthier way of living for our entire family.
  2. When our son was evaluated to see if he did in fact have Inattentive ADHD (which we knew before the evaluation) the following had to happen…
    1. Questionnaire filled out by the parents.
    2. Questionnaire filled out his previous year teacher.
    3. Questionnaire filled our by his current year teacher.
    4. Meeting with the principal.
    5. Review of school records.
    6. Evaluation by the board Psychologist with our son over a few weeks.
    7. Meeting with parents, psychologist, principal and teachers.

By voicing my stance am I saying I am against medications – not at all! There are times when they truly are needed. However in the above circumstance with our son, we were involved as a family on what was going on and were given the choice to choose how best to support him because he is under 18. I truly believe it is because of this that not only he, but we as a family are now thriving.

Why is this important? Because ADHD is a form of mental illness. Our son was under 18 at the time of his evaluation and diagnosis so his parents were automatically involved. We had concerns so we could voice them and see results happen because of voicing our opinion and being involved 100% of the way.

Our mental health goes beyond medication.

Our mental health goes beyond just ourselves.

Our mental health is the most precious thing we each have in our life.

The difference is once you are 18 you are ALONE.

Completely alone.

This may sound harsh, is it? Yes very much. But its the bitter sweet truth.

Once you turn 18 you are completely alone to manage your emotional and physical health. Even younger than this age, children are able to go to the doctor without a loved one and be prescribed medication.

Once you turn 18, regardless of your state of mental health you are given the option of privacy and consent for your loved ones, next of kin, parents to be told anything by the Doctor or health facility. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency you are the only person spoken to and your health care is based upon their observations of you and your answers – solely.

To many reading this, you may think well yes because I am an adult thats the way it should be. For a moment, put your own opinion and ego aside.

If you are truly in a mental health crisis or experiencing negative symptoms with mental health – are you in your right mind to know you need help!? There are some people who could say yes to this. There is a lot more people who think they would know when they need help but unfortunately they do not.

How many of us have heard someone say “I Am Fine!” But you compassionately know deep down they are not fine.

  • In any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness.

How common is it?

What needs to change in my opinion?

  • Children need to be educated that its normal to talk about emotional and physical feelings. Encourage them to go to a loved one and that there truly are no stupid questions. The importance of having someone you can trust and knowing that if you speak up your voice will be heard. Keeping lines of communication open in a positive – kid friendly way within the home.
  • Teachers encouraging children vs condemning on what they can do and supporting those students to grow and flourish.
  • Allowing loved ones and/or family members to be involved in mental health care.
  • Educating people on why its crucial to have a loved one you trust – no matter what – as an emergency contact with your doctor which could be accessible on your ohip profile. Someone who if you were in a mental health crisis or your loved on believed you to be in danger, could be involved in treatment as well as assessment of your well-being.
  • Nature knows – use Holistic options before pharmaceuticals

From my experience personally and with loved ones – millions of dollars could be saved from our health care costs by allowing family members to be involved in treatment. It is the loved ones who regularly see the person, loved ones who may be the ones who are noticing a difference, loved ones who once all the ‘treatment’ by the medical professional has come to an end – are there for the person, medical professionals, with all due respect, evaluate a person based on that exact moment –

The frequencies in our body and how we live our life, emotions of feeling happy, sad and every thing in between affect our frequencies by raising or lowering. The lower our frequencies are in our body, our health begins to be affected physically.

Is it a slippery slope? Truly it is. But not that long ago so was assisted suicide for those with incurable medical conditions. Now this is an option within our society. So I believe things can and should change. There must be a compassionate care clause that allows concerned family members and loved ones to help someone they love who is in need. Because the truth of the matter is… we simply cannot do this alone!

The Sinking Ship

A few weeks ago I got hit quite hard emotionally.

I literally felt like the breath had been taken out of me and my legs from under me.

When hit emotionally/mentally sometimes we do not even realize the true impact until we can feel ourselves [finally] coming out of it.

This weekend was just that for me.

After a few weeks of feeling sunk – which now is a completely different feeling than years before. Now feeling sunk for me was still taking my supplements (vitamins, minerals and omega) daily, weekly yoga – although that first week I will be honest I skipped yoga but went back the following 2 weeks, using my oils multiple times per day, letting the dishes, laundry and cleaning slip to later on my list and just honoring ME and what I need in that exact moment – even if that means sitting on the couch watching tv!

Unfortunately what feeling sunk is still for me was emotional eating… one thing Ive battled with for well over 20 years. Like a yo-yo at times. The past few weeks I reached for my “comfort”… tv and snacks. Albeit they were healthy – I was waking up multiple times in the night some nights with a stomach ache and just feeling blah.

With our to-do list literally looming over our heads but simply not having any energy whatsoever to even think of hitting that list or even staying caught up on the daily “to-do”. Its incredible how our lives can be affected in so many ways.

This weekend, I could feel myself pulling out. Ive hit lows before – Ive pulled out many times before. I am beginning to recognize and honor myself – to be ok with letting things sit for as long as I need them to. For asking for help and being ok with being vulnerable. For admitting things aren’t great and I may need some time and knowing its ok to say no.

This weekend I put everything else aside. We put our family and our home 1st and damn did it feel good. But the key thing… I was ready. I was ready to pull out of the funk and pour focus where it truly needed to be.

I allowed myself Friday night to rest and plan. I knew the weekend – if I followed through with my plans – was going to be FULL and I needed to start with a fresh mind.

What happened different for me?!

I truly believe the full day mindset workshop I did with Helen Murray last Monday helped in so many ways. From the day of that workshop I have since meditated daily – sometimes more than once a day. I have picked up my journal and wrote. I have picked up my book and even if just a few pages – Ive read. Ive gone to bed early even to just lay in bed and be still and silent. Ive been mindful.

Ive been mentally preparing for the shift that has needed to happen in our home that honestly for years has been so incredibly daunting to me.

These past few weeks pulled me back, pulled me a bit more into focus where I needed to be at the time for support, but also pulled me back to help me re-evaluate what I thought I needed/wanted to bring into focus of what I truly needed to fall into place.

Ive been planning our office/spare bedroom reno for a while… Honestly if you asked my husband how many times Ive moved furniture in that room he would just roll his eyes. Its been a room that has been a work in progress but also a “catch all” for so many years, especially during all the rest of the house renovations ;)

Im honestly so proud of myself that I could recognize my need for time – to listen to my mind and body, to recognize the signs and call myself out on what I was doing that I knew was not good for my mind or body. To also honor that although I want to just “fix” it, I can only do what is within my control. What is within my control is myself and my home.

So this weekend that was our focus… creating the most amazing home office, spare bedroom and Zen space that there ever could be! Taking the ‘old’ and making it new again to re-purpose into exactly what was unfolding to be. Not only did I get the room completely emptied of “stuff”, hubby took my existing wall desk unit and dismantled it to give it new life with paint while I smudged the room to clear any negative energy and then painted it to create our new blank canvas! In one day the room was emptied, primed, 1 coat of paint and the office furniture all completely primed. The next day I woke up and started some banana bread baking (with the very ripe banana’s that the previous me would have just say f it and thrown them out) and finished painting while the bread was baking. Hubs put the final coat on the furniture and its almost ready to assemble in our newly improved room which will be focused on organization and peace! I am excited to share the before and after – if you are on insta go check out the before and in between! This was a huge accomplishment for me…

Even at times in our life when it feels like the ship is sinking… there is something that you need to release and let go to bring yourself back afloat. But honor that in you. Don’t force it. Don’t push yourself to be where you think you should be – you will get there and honor your time in doing so.

This hit me while painting our room this weekend… It suddenly came to me that I haven’t had this push, this drive in a while. I had been putting off our spare bedroom for years and even while feeling at a low point in life – I felt myself pull back. Almost like an elastic… being pulled back and back, suddenly I [finally] felt catapulted forward where I needed to be. With peace and reassurance that its OK to focus on me and my family – because one day everything else will fall back into place as it should be.

Quietly Silencing Ourselves…

STOP THE CAR!!!

After an amazingly hot weekend away at a family cottage, swimming, boating, fishing, water skiiing, swan floating lol on the 5 hour ride home I ran into trouble with my tummy and this statement was NOT what my hubby wanted to hear!

Who else out there quietly silences themselves when your body and mind are screaming at you – NO!

“I’ll be fine…” or “I don’t want to inconvenience anyone…”

Our family has made a huge shift in our life at HOME — that Ive still struggled with being away from home, especially when visiting or traveling.

I truly paid for it and was reminded how crucial healthy eating is no matter what I need to do to eat healthy. Our food when away was wonderful, kids got slightly over charged on sugar at a group picnic we went to – however it was manageable. Being ADHD parents we know the effects, we recognize the signs and we are educating the kids more and more on WHY these things aren’t great for them or us and must be consumed in moderation.

For many years, even before I met my husband, I struggled with my digestive system. I struggled however I felt so ashamed and embarrassed and I also didn’t know how to handle it. For over 30 years of my life I struggled off and on. Most of those years in complete silence because I felt weird and not normal.

What I have learned alot about in these past 4+ years is that gut health is absolutely crucial to our overall health physically and mentally.

On our 5 hour drive home from our family’s cottage we stopped to eat… we had our dog with us so it couldn’t be a sit down restaurant so I literally said “f*** it just go there…”

No word of a lie in less than 15 minutes after finishing eating a chicken burger and about 15 fries I was in major trouble… NOT a good feeling when you are on a highway and literally feel like you are going to explode and are in excruciating pain. TMI perhaps… however for many of us this is real life.

I set myself aside, I put my personal needs and the health of my family aside because we just needed to stop somewhere to get food – which by the way is not real food. We thankfully arrived at another fast food place where I was able to go in and use the facilities. We had to make additional stops before we made it home. I however was still dealing with the pain and discomfort well into the entire next day and night.

At that moment in the van while driving I wasn’t even thinking straight, I was so uncomfortable and pissed off at myself for doing that and my touch kit was buried in my suitcase in the far back of the van… We got home, I got oils ALL over me and pulled out my pro-biotics… which were empty! Amazing planning on my part… However I had just stocked up on the kids pro-biotics which… let me tell you took me right back to my child hood in a flash! Do you remember the pixie sticks and fun dip lol.  Yum they seriously taste that good but without the sugar… win win for me (and our kids ;) )! These along with my TerraZyme digestive enzymes,, digest zen oil and zendocrine oil have been a life saver for me this entire week. Its not just a day or couple day thing when I have flare ups like this… I have had to be so damn careful for the entire week as my guts were suddenly very sensitive again. What Ive learned about my health – just before oils entered our life – is I cannot eat any reheated starches – potatoes of any kind, pasta, rice… if I do this is what happens. Ive learned to listen to my body, to hear what it is telling me. However sometimes I quiet that voice in me, most times to go with the flow of others around me when in reality this is hurting me more. What I have re-committed to myself this week is standing firm in my voice, in my health and in my belief’s. Knowing in my heart that the choices Ive made and need to make for my health is for me to be my best self.

After an incredibly heart filling summer thus far, my family is home in our own oasis for the weekend to relax and recharge to enjoy the rest of the summer into the fall. My guts are back to feeling how they should be and I am inspired and ready for all the amazing things to come <3
